Fall 2022
This project was a collaboration with my Community-Focused Design Studio class, with the class dividing up into smaller teams to tackle different aspects of the project. Our client was Greater Denton Arts Council, and my class was tasked to create two different concepts for the 36th Annual Materials Hard + Soft Exhibition catalog, with the winning team going on to design the entire catalog. The concept my team created was loosely based on travel and the how artists from all over the world participate in this craft exhibition. We wanted to go with a slight vintage style without too many textures, as that was the other team's main concept. A big design element we included was contour maps; these show changes in elevation through a series of contours and are fairly abstract to those unfamiliar with such maps. I wanted to use these contour maps as a way to suggest location without being too on-the-nose. One of my team members even created a contour map of the Denton area that we included on the end pages to give homage to where the exhibition is held. I was in charge of the overall style guide and I checked for consistency amongst my teammates' designs, making changes as needed to preserve cohesion. In the end, our concept was not chosen, but we were able to provide a fresh, unique design concept for Greater Denton Arts Council that defied expectations set by previous catalogs.
